How to Mount Air Plants on Driftwood and Cholla Wood (No Glue)
Quick answer: You can mount air plants on driftwood or cholla wood without glue by tucking them into natural holes and crevices, or by fastening them with florist wire, fishing line, or a removable adhesive like museum putty. Never use hot glue on the living base, and always keep the plant removable so you can take it down to soak and dry. Mounted air plants look stunning and, done right, live for years.
Why wood makes a great mount
In the wild, tillandsias grow on branches, so wood is their natural home. Cholla wood, the hollow skeleton of a cholla cactus, is a favorite because its holes cradle plant bases perfectly and it dries fast. Driftwood and grapewood add sculptural, coastal character. Because air plants have no roots to bury, mounting is really just holding the plant in place while it lives on the surface.
Method 1: tuck, no glue needed
The simplest mount uses the wood's own shape. Wedge the plant's base into a natural hole, fork, or crevice snug enough to hold it. Cholla wood is ideal because its openings grip bulbous bases. Many plants stay put with no fastening at all, and this keeps them fully removable for watering.
Method 2: wire or fishing line
For a more secure hold, loop florist wire, fishing line, or a thin coated wire gently around the base of the plant, not the leaves, and twist or tie it to the wood. Keep it snug but not cutting in. Over time some plants root onto the wood with their holdfasts and no longer need the wire. This is the go-to method for wall pieces and vertical mounts.
Method 3: removable putty
A dab of museum putty or florist tack under the base holds a light plant to smooth wood and lets you pop it off to water. It is clean and reversible, which is why we prefer it to glue.
Why not hot glue?
Hot glue is common in tutorials, but it can scorch and damage the living base, and it fixes the plant in place so you cannot remove it to water and dry properly. If you must use an adhesive, use a waterproof, plant-safe one like E6000 sparingly on the very base and let it cure fully. Removable methods are safer and just as attractive.
Caring for a mounted air plant
Water by taking the whole mount to the sink and soaking or dunking, or by misting and dunking if the piece is large. Either way, let the plant and the wood dry fully within 4 hours, since wood that stays wet against the base invites rot. Cholla wood dries fastest, which is part of why we love it. FAQ
How do you attach air plants to wood without glue? Tuck them into natural holes, or fasten the base with florist wire, fishing line, or removable putty. Keep them removable for watering.
Will air plants root onto the wood? Often, yes. Their holdfast roots may grip the wood over time, which anchors them naturally.
How do I water a mounted air plant? Soak or dunk the whole mount, then dry it fully within 4 hours. Cholla wood dries especially fast.
